Geology
top of page

The countryside varies from sweeping prairie and rolling foothills to rugged mountains and the elevation climbs rapidly from 5,550 feet to 13,626 feet.    The ancient-forces of glaciers and volcanic-heat created the Sangre de Cristo Mountain-Range, the Spanish Peaks, Huerfano Butte, Goemmer's Butte and the rock walls, called dikes, that stand like sentinels along Highway 12.    The result is a landscape not found anywhere else.

History
top of page

Legends speak of ancient gold mines and Spanish explorers.   Records show that Spanish Conquistadors did visit this area in the 1500s.   They encountered some nine ancient Indian tribes.   The Ute, Apache, Navajo, Southern - Cheyenne and Comanche were all known to live in or "roam" the valley.   Mountain men, traders, trappers and pioneers were all drawn to the Valley, many traveling the Santa Fe Trail.   While gold finds were few in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the area was found to be rich in coal deposits and numerous mines opened throughout the area.    At the same time, people were discovering the curative powers of the crisp mountain air and the Valley was touted as a health resort.    In recent years, people have come to enjoy the quiet and secluded nature of the valley.

"There is a saying that if you spend an hour in this valley, you will want to spend a week and if you spend a week, you'll want to spend a lifetime."

Let us take you on a guided tour and we'll attempt to tell you why the above quote is so true about this beautiful, serene & unspoiled area.   La Veta established 1876, where we are located, is a sleepy town sitting in the green lush Cucharas Valley at 7,013 feet.     The town has mostly been a ranching community of some 800 year-round residents.    Besides the original ranching families, there is now a diverse mix of creative individuals and people like you who are looking to settle in a tranquil environment.    La Veta boasts galleries, shops, groceries, Grandote Peaks Golf Club, schools, restaurants and other numerous amenities.    It also offers quaint homes, building lots and secluded properties in a variety of terrain, most all with spectacular views.   We'll head south up the Highway of Legends (one of Colorado's most picturesque byways) to the rustic mountain community of Cuchara with its small charming village nestled amongst the aspens and evergreens.     Cabins and home sites dot the lofty mountain slopes and valleys.    Skiing and winter sports are available starting mid-December at Cuchara Mountain Resort.     Continuing south up the Highway we find an assortment of sub-alpine lakes for fishing, boating, camping and great hiking all for the outdoor enthusiast.    We will travel by and through incredible dike walls, rolling meadows, beautiful vistas, through several small outlying villages ending up in Trinidad , adjacent to the New Mexico border.   From La Veta if we will travel north, north west through mesa country of red clay arroyos with its abundance of pinyon and cedar we will arrive in Gardner.     It also is a ranching community nestled between the Wet Mountains and the Sangre de Cristo mountain range with the Huerfano River meandering around and through the valley and foot hills.   Walsenburg the county seat is the nearest "metropolis" with an average population of 4,000.    It is a growing town with a hospital, supermarket, auto repair shops, restaurants and bars, and all the amenities that a small "city" offers plus a nearby state park.   Pueblo , one of our closest "Big Cities" is an easy hour away and is home to Colorado State University and does offer you almost every thing that our rural towns do not.     So you can tell from our descriptive tour we are naturally secluded, but accessible and can offer you a variety of home sites and properties for your particular taste and needs.
